Making a mug

1) First of all, the raw material is put into a grinder and ground into a smaller, more manageable clay powder. The clay powder is combined with quartz feldspar and water in a mixer for 15 hours. 

2) The refining process continues when the clay slurry is fed into moulding tubes and formed into clay balls which are cut into specific portions. The portion discs are placed in a disposable mould and take the shape of your cup.

3) After drying, the mug is removed from the mould by hand and is ready for the next step. Processing the applications, the mud handles are made in the same way as the body of the mug. 

4) Once the handles have dried and been removed from the mould, they are dipped into a mixture of clay and water called slip, which acts as a glue. Now it is time to work on the details.

5) A technician carefully removes any excess clay or rough edges, removing any dust or debris and giving the cup a perfectly smooth finish.

6) It is now time to give the mugs their characteristic colour and ceramic glaze. Some mugs are dipped in a single colour glaze, the edges are padded and they are ready for the next step. Other mugs need a little more Flair. For example, a specially painted rim or a different colour on the inside than on the outside.

Where do salt stone lamps come from?

The region where the salt is mined is called Khewra. Kherwa, about 160 km from Islamabad, is a town in the foothills of the Himalayas in the Punjab region of Pakistan. The origin of the fossil salt corresponds to the evaporation of an inland sea 800 million years ago. The formation of the Himalayas raised the soils of the region and caused the salt rocks to outcrop near the surface.

 

According to legend, the mine was discovered by Alexander the Great's troops in the 4th century BC. His army's horses, tired after a battle, regained their strength after licking stones in caves, thus discovering the salt deposit. Commercial and artisanal mining began in the 13th century under the Mughals. In the 19th century, the British improved access to the mine by levelling the previously dangerous mountain road, upgrading and securing the drifts and building warehouses to allow industrial mining.

As of 2012, the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation operates the mine, which has proven mineable reserves of at least 82 million tonnes. 

 

Kherwa is also a major tourist destination, attracting over 40,000 visitors each year. The mine can be visited on foot or by small train pulled by an electric vehicle built in the 1930s. The salt caves are home to unusual sculptures and structures, such as a mosque built with luminous salt stones of different colours and a statue of the great poet Mohamed.

Mechanical clocks began to develop. More than thirty testimonies are quoted from all over Europe at the end of the 13th century. In these texts we find the purchase of iron and weights and the acquisition of expensive clocks in monasteries, cathedrals and princely residences. These prices were often considerable: six marks for the clock of the monastery of Colmar in 1278, thirty pounds for that of Canterbury in 1292, fifty pounds for a simple repair or transformation of the clock of the cathedral of Sens in 1319.

Gradually, the mechanical clock, whose movement is permanently maintained by a motorised weight, replaced the boring water clock that had to be constantly cleaned and filled or emptied. It seems that these early clocks - like the water clocks - were first intended to strike a particular time (e.g. alarm clock) and a little later to strike different times of the day; these clocks were "blind": they had no dial! The striking mechanism was operated by one or more pins on a wheel of the mechanism.

This transfer of technology from hydraulic to mechanical power enabled the original purpose of the clock to be retained: the striking of a precise hour; this invention has therefore remained practically anonymous. It was not until a little later, in 1336, that an important innovation changed the history of clock-making: striking clocks.

Inspired by both puffins and penguins, it was the director of The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson, who came up with the name of the Porg, and its appearance is memorable and fleeting.
