The first mechanical clocks The best historians of time measurement agree today that the origin of mechanical clocks dates back to the end of the 13th century. The earliest references to clocks with a wheel or pendulum are from the 14th century, including those of Richard of Wallingford (abbot of St Alban), Charles V and the Duke of Burgundy.
